The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya's older cousin Jasmine had it all figured out. The high school social hierarchy wasn't a ladder—it was a pyramid, and Jasmine was teaching her how to climb.
"You don't just show up to Jordan's pool party," Jasmine explained, scrolling through her iphone. "You curate your moment."
Maya stood at the edge of Jordan's backyard, clutching her towel like a shield. The swimming pool glittered like something from a lifestyle she didn't belong to. Popular kids splashed in the deep end while the rest clustered awkwardly around the snack table.
"But what do I DO?" Maya had asked earlier.
"You become the girl everyone wants to know," Jasmine had said. "Confidence is currency."
Maya spotted Buster, Jordan's ancient golden retriever, napping under a lawn chair. The dog wheezed in his sleep, completely unbothered by the social dynamics unfolding around him.
Suddenly, Buster jolted awake and bolted toward the pool—straight toward the shallow end where Sarah, the girl Jordan had been flirting with all summer, was adjusting her bikini top.
"BUSTER, NO!" Maya shouted, lunging forward without thinking.
She grabbed the dog's collar just as his paws hit the wet concrete. They both tumbled sideways. Maya landed hard on her elbow, her phone flying from her pocket and skidding across the deck.
The pool party went silent. Sarah pulled her towel tighter. Jordan's friends stared.
Maya's face burned. She'd ruined everything. Jasmine's pyramid advice had failed spectacularly.
Then someone laughed.
Sarah started giggling. "That was... actually really heroic. Stupid, but heroic."
"The dog was running full speed at you," Maya mumbled, sitting up and checking her elbow.
"I'm Sarah," the girl said, dropping down to sit beside her. "And that's Buster, public enemy number one."
Jordan appeared with a towel for Maya's phone. "That was insane. You're like, fast."
"I was scared for Sarah," Maya admitted.
"Well," Jasmine called from the deck, smirking, "looks like someone found her own way up the pyramid."
Maya sat there with the popular kids, the dog now happily snoring beside her, her phone safely retrieved. Maybe the pyramid wasn't about climbing at all. Maybe it was about finding the people who'd sit with you on the ground level, laughing at the chaos.
