The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya pressed her face against the chain-link fence, feeling exactly like the **spy** she pretended to be in her head. The cool metal dug into her forehead as she watched the popular kids rehearse their spring flash mob on the football field. From her vantage point behind the equipment shed, she could see everything—and they couldn't see her at all.

The school's social hierarchy worked like a **pyramid**, with the seniors at the apex and everyone else layered beneath. Maya occupied the middle stratum—visible enough to be noticed, invisible enough to be forgotten. Which was exactly how she liked it. Being the wallflower meant having the best view without the pressure to perform.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A text from Chloe: "R U coming?? We need ur help with the sound cables!"

Maya had been voluntold for tech crew duties, which mostly involved wrangling tangled masses of audio **cable** that smelled like middle school gym class. But honestly? She didn't mind. Someone had to make sure the mics actually worked during the assembly.

She was about to reply when her brother's **dog**, Buster—a chaos demon in golden retriever form—came barreling around the corner of the shed, his leash trailing behind him like a snake. He'd escaped again. Before she could grab him, he spotted the popular kids and made a beeline for their formation, barking joyfully.

"Buster, NO!"

Maya sprinted after him, accidentally crashing right into the middle of their rehearsal. The music stopped. Everyone stared.

And that's when she noticed it—the girl at the front of the formation, the one at the very top of the social pyramid, was crying. Silent tears cutting through perfect foundation. Nobody else seemed to see it, or they were pretending not to.

The pyramid looked different from the inside.

Maya grabbed Buster's collar, breathing hard. "I'm so sorry," she started to say.

The popular girl—what was her name? Riley?—wiped her face quickly and managed a weak smile. "It's fine. Your dog is adorable."

"He's a menace," Maya said automatically, then softened. "But yeah, he's pretty great."

They stood there for a moment, two girls from different levels of the pyramid, connected by a chaotic dog and an awkward moment.

"Hey," Riley said, "You're doing sound setup, right? Can you... I mean, if it's not too much trouble, could you maybe help me fix my mic before the assembly? It keeps cutting out."

Maya blinked. The queen of the school was asking *her* for help?

"Yeah," Maya found herself saying. "Yeah, I can totally help with that."

And just like that, the pyramid didn't feel so steep anymore.
