The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the cafeteria's invisible social pyramid, her lunch tray feeling heavier than her backpack. At the apex sat the influencers, their phones raised like modern scepters as they documented every bite. At the bottom? The rest of us, just trying to survive middle school like sleep-deprived zombies after an all-night gaming session.

"You're doing it again," said Sam, sliding into the seat across from her. "The spy thing."

Maya blinked. "I'm not spying. I'm observing. There's a difference."

"You're staring at Jordan like you're gathering intel for a mission." Sam raised an eyebrow. "Just talk to him already."

Maya's stomach did that annoying fluttery thing. Jordan, with his ridiculous bear hoodie and somehow-coiffed bedhead, sat two tables away. He'd smiled at her in yesterday's bio lab when she accidentally knocked over her vitamin supplements—the fancy ones her mom swore would boost her "academic performance" (whatever that meant).

"I can't just talk to him," Maya protested. "What would I even say? 'Hey Jordan, nice hoodie. Also, I may have memorized your schedule because I happened to notice it'? That's not weird at all."

Sam laughed. "You're overthinking it. You know what his friends call him? 'The Human Bear' because he literally hibernates every weekend. Just ask him about video games or something."

Before Maya could respond, the cafeteria went quiet. Jordan was walking toward their table. Her heart rate spiked. This was it. The moment all those cringey teen books talked about.

"Hey," Jordan said, stopping at their table. "Maya, right?"

She nodded, probably looking like a bobblehead.

"You dropped these yesterday." He held out her vitamin container. "Been meaning to return it."

"Thanks," she managed, her voice not cracking (small victories). "Those vitamins are basically my life force."

"No judgment." Jordan grinned. "I practically live on energy drinks. Anyway, I heard you like that new survival game?"

Sam kicked Maya under the table.

"Yeah!" Maya said, a little too enthusiastically. "I mean, yeah, it's pretty good."

"We should play sometime," Jordan said. "I'll add you."

As he walked away, Maya looked at Sam. "Did that just happen?"

"The social pyramid," Sam declared, "has been officially disrupted."
