The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at her reflection, willing her hair to cooperate. The curly chaos had a mind of its own, and today it was definitely not vibing with the whole 'effortlessly cool' aesthetic she was going for. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the beast, and now she had exactly three minutes before Jordan would arrive.
"Stupid social pyramid," she muttered, grabbing her phone to check her Insta. The school's invisible hierarchy felt like a pyramid scheme she'd never signed up for—popular kids at the top, everyone else trying to climb their way up through likes and followers. And Jordan? Jordan was practically at the peak.
Her cat, Luna, chose that moment to knock over the tangled mess of cables behind her TV. The router blinked ominously.
"No, no, no!" Maya dove for the cables. Her parents still refused to upgrade their internet setup, insisting the cable company's ancient router was "perfectly fine." Now Luna had disconnected everything, and Jordan would be here any second for their history project—and probably expecting to Netflix and chill while they worked.
The doorbell rang.
Maya's heart did that annoying fluttery thing. She opened the door, hair still doing whatever it wanted, Luna now curled innocently on the couch like she hadn't just committed technological sabotage.
"Hey!" Jordan's grin was exactly as devastating as usual. "Ready to conquer that ancient Egypt presentation?"
Maya's stomach dropped. The pyramids. She'd forgotten to finish her part about the Great Pyramid of Giza.
"Totally," she lied, discovering a sudden confidence. "Just finishing up some... research."
Jordan spotted Luna and immediately abandoned all coolness to make kissy faces at the cat. "Omg, who's this queen?"
"That's Luna. She's chaotic evil."
"Same," Jordan laughed, finally meeting Maya's eyes. "Hey, I love your hair, by the way. It's so... you."
Maya blinked. Was that... a compliment? From Jordan?
"Thanks?"
"No, seriously." Jordan stepped closer, voice dropping. "It's authentic. Not like everyone else trying to look like a TikTok clone."
They stood there for a moment, Luna purring loudly between them like a tiny, furry conspiracy. Maybe the pyramid wasn't as rigid as she'd thought. Maybe there was room to be yourself and still—somehow—find your place.
"So," Maya said, a little smile sneaking onto her face, "about those pyramids..."
