The Social Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at the massive papier-mâché **pyramid** looming in the gymnasium corner. Homecoming week. The ultimate test of high school survival.
"You coming?" Priya yelled, already halfway across the dance floor. Priya, who moved through social circles like a **fox**—sleek, calculated, always three steps ahead. She'd somehow secured an invite to Jordan's afterparty, the holy grail of Friday nights.
Maya's chest tightened. She couldn't **bear** another weekend watching Netflix alone while her Instagram feed exploded with everyone else's legendary adventures.
Then she saw him.
Leo sat on the bleachers, scrolling through his phone, looking like he'd rather be literally anywhere else. The guy was a total **sphinx**—mysterious, quiet, impossible to read. Nobody even knew what he did outside school.
Something in Maya snapped. Maybe it was the desperation, maybe it was the bass from "Electric Feel" shaking her ribs. She marched over.
"Wanna get out of here?"
Leo looked up, eyebrows raised. "Seriously?"
"Yeah. I've got ice cream. And my parents' Netflix password."
His lip twitched. Almost a smile. "You had me at ice cream."
They slipped out the side door while Priya was busy taking selfies with the varsity squad. The night air hit Maya's lungs like freedom. The social pyramid inside suddenly felt very small and very far away.
"You know," Leo said as they walked toward the QT, "I've been wanting to ask you to hang for, like, two months."
Maya stopped. "Wait, really?"
"You're the only person who doesn't treat me like I'm some freak." He shrugged. "So yeah. Really."
They got mint chocolate chip and sat on the curb watching cars pass. Somewhere inside, the pyramid mattered. Somewhere, Priya was being a fox and Jordan's party was happening and the whole elaborate hierarchy of high school spun on.
But here? Here was just ice cream and someone who finally saw her.
"Next week," Maya said, "we're going to that party together."
Leo laughed. "Bet."
The sphinx had finally spoken. And somehow, that was better than any legendary adventure she could've imagined.
