The Social Pyramid Scheme

Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket as she stood in the corner of Jake's basement, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. She pulled out her iPhone, staring at the group chat where everyone was already posting stories. Of course she was the only one not tagged yet.

"Hey, you're blocking the cable," someone said.

Maya jumped, nearly spilling her water on the tangle of cords snaking across the floor. A guy in a backwards snapback stood there, smirking. That was Tyler, captain of the debate team and somehow still one of the coolest people in their grade.

"Sorry," she muttered, stepping aside and tucking a loose curl behind her ear.

"You good? You look like you're mentally calculating escape routes."

"Is it that obvious?"

"Only to someone who's been there." Tyler leaned against the wall, scrolling through his own phone. "Freshman year, I hid in the bathroom at Emma's party for forty-five minutes because I didn't know how to dance."

Maya laughed. "You? But you're like, top of the food chain now."

"The social pyramid is all a scam, Maya. Seriously." He gestured around the room. "Everyone's just pretending they know what they're doing. The ones who act the most confident? Usually the most terrified."

A random guy stumbled past, bumping into Tyler and knocking his hat off. Tyler's carefully gelled hair flopped over his forehead. He didn't scramble to fix it. Instead, he just picked up the hat and tossed it onto a nearby table.

"See? Persona gone." He grinned. "Anyway, my point is — you're overthinking it. These people? They're just people. Some are cool, some suck, most are somewhere in between."

Maya looked around the room really looked at people. The 'popular' girls taking perfect photos. The guys dominating the beer pong table. The quiet ones by the snacks. They weren't a pyramid. They were just... people trying to figure it out.

"Want to get some fresh air?" Tyler asked. "There's a porch out back. And I promise not to make you debate anything."

Maya smiled, setting her cup down. "Yeah. Actually, I'd like that."

As they walked outside, her phone buzzed again. This time, she didn't check it. Some things were more important than the notification game.
