The Social Pyramid and Other Mysteries
Maya dragged herself into third period, feeling like a total zombie. Three weeks into freshman year and she was still running on two hours of sleep and a worrying amount of caffeine. High school was nothing like the movies—nobody sang in the hallways, and the social pyramid was more brutal than she'd expected.
At the base were the nobody's like her, hoping to remain invisible. The middle tiers held the band kids, theater geeks, and smart crowd. Then there were the gods at the top—varsity athletes, the impossibly shiny popular kids who seemed to have life figured out at fourteen.
"Hey, zombie girl," whispered Sophie, sliding into the desk beside her. "You look like you haven't slept since graduation."
"Haven't," Maya mumbled, dropping her head onto her folded arms.
Their US history teacher was droning on about Egypt, and Maya found herself zoning out until something caught her attention. The Sphinx—this mysterious creature with impossible riddles, destroying anyone who couldn't solve them. That's basically high school, she thought. The entire system was designed to crush you if you didn't know the answers.
At lunch, Maya poked at her tray. The school's attempt at "exotic fruit day" had resulted in something that looked suspiciously like papaya but tasted like sadness. Her friends debated which senior would win Homecoming Queen while she calculated how many minutes until she could go home and sleep forever.
Then she saw her—Chloe, the sphinx-like senior who sat with the popular kids but somehow seemed removed from all of it. Chloe caught Maya's eye and actually smiled. Not fake-smiled, but like they were sharing a secret.
"What was THAT?" Sophie hissed. "Did the Sphinx just acknowledge you?"
Maya's face burned. She had no idea what it meant, but for the first time since stepping into this building, she felt something that wasn't dread or exhaustion.
Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as unclimbable as she thought. Maybe high school wasn't just about surviving. Maybe—just maybe—she was starting to wake up from this zombie phase after all.
She took a bite of the papaya. It was still awful, but she didn't hate it quite as much as before.
