The Social Pyramid

Maya's sweaty palm gripped the red plastic cup as she stood by the pool, watching the water ripple in the artificial blue expanse. This was supposed to be the party of the year, but honestly? She felt like a total fraud.

"You good?" Jenna whispered, elbowing her. Her best friend since third grade, Jenna was the only reason Maya had even shown up.

"Just observing the social pyramid in action," Maya muttered, nodding toward where Tyler and his crew had claimed the prime real estate around the outdoor speakers. Tyler was at the apex, naturally, holding court like he owned the place.

Jenna snorted. "You mean the pyramid scheme where everyone pretends to like each other for clout?"

"Exactly." Maya took a sip of lukewarm soda. "I feel like I'm spy duty or something. Just watching how this works."

The truth was, Maya had been crushing on Tyler's friend Marcus all semester, and tonight felt like her chance to actually talk to him. But every time she tried to move closer to their circle, her feet felt glued to the concrete.

Across the pool, Marcus suddenly looked up and caught her eye. Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. He smiled—actually smiled—and started walking toward her.

"Hey," he said when he reached her. "I saw you watching us. Everything cool?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. "Yeah, just... you know, enjoying the... water?" She gestured vaguely at the pool.

"Nice." Marcus laughed, and it was genuine. "Hey, some of us are gonna grab food after this. You and Jenna want to come?"

Jenna, who had conveniently disappeared to the bathroom, chose that exact moment to reappear. "We'd love to!" she announced before Maya could process what was happening.

As Marcus walked away, Maya looked at her friend. "Did that just happen?"

"The pyramid just crumbled, babe," Jenna grinned. "And you're finally climbing up."
