The Social Pyramid
Maya's first week at Northwood High felt like navigating a pyramid scheme she never signed up for. The cafeteria alone had a social hierarchy more complex than the actual food chain.
"You look like a zombie," said Leo, sliding into the seat across from her.
Leo was her only friend so far - a fellow freshman with perpetually messy hair and an alarming ability to function on three hours of sleep.
"Stayed up finishing that English essay," Maya groaned, rubbing her eyes. "Mr. Harrison thinks 'creative expression' means three pages on why symbolism matters."
"Welcome to high school, where sleep goes to die." Leo gestured toward the popular table. "And social lives go to thrive. Look at them. It's like watching a live-action reality show."
Maya followed his gaze. At the center sat Chloe - the Sphinx of Northwood High. Chloe barely spoke, yet everyone hung on her every word like she was dispensing wisdom instead of just eating a bagel.
"She's not that intimidating," Maya lied.
"Literally everyone is scared of her. Last week, Jake asked for a pencil, and she just stared until he literally crumbled."
Then the impossible happened. Chloe stood up and started walking toward their table.
"Oh my god," Leo whispered. "What did we do?"
Chloe stopped beside Maya. Her orange hoodie - the one Maya's mom said was 'too bright' - suddenly felt like a beacon calling attention to everything wrong with her outfit.
"Cool hoodie," Chloe said. "I like how you're not afraid to wear color."
Then she walked away.
Leo stared at her retreating figure. "Did the Sphinx just compliment your hoodie?"
Maya looked down at her orange sweatshirt. The one she'd almost swapped for a gray one this morning, fearing it was too much.
"Yeah," she said, a slow smile spreading across her face. "I guess she did."
The next day, Maya wore the orange hoodie again. When she passed Chloe in the hallway, Chloe nodded. Not smiled - Chloe didn't do smiles - but it was recognition.
Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as rigid as it seemed. Maybe you could be a zombie tired freshman in an orange hoodie and still be seen by the Sphinx at the top.
Or maybe high school was just weird like that.
