The Social Pyramid

Maya stared at her iphone, thumb hovering over the screenshot everyone was sharing. Another pyramid post. Someone had ranked the sophomore class, and she was somewhere near the bottom—again.

"It's just for laughs," said Chloe, flipping her perfect hair. But Maya saw the calculation in her eyes. The school's social pyramid was real, and Chloe sat comfortably at the apex.

That afternoon, Maya ditched her usual route home and found herself behind the old gymnasium. There she was—the girl everyone called "Fox" for her cunning ability to get what she wanted. Fox (real name: Riley) was crouched near the fence, camera trained on something in the grass.

"You're gonna scare it away," Fox whispered without looking up.

Maya froze. "Scare what?"

A rust-and-gold dog—part coyote, part mystery—twitched its ears, watching them both.

"He's been living back here for weeks," Fox said, finally lowering her camera. "Everyone thinks he's dangerous. They call animal control, spread rumors. But he's just... lonely."

Maya sat beside her. "Like you?"

Fox laughed—actually laughed. "Touché. But unlike me, he doesn't care about the pyramid."

"The what?"

"The popularity pyramid. The screenshot. You're not the only one who saw it, Maya. You're just the only one who let it hurt you."

Something shifted. Maybe it was the way Fox said her name, or the way the dog inched closer, or the fact that for once, someone at school had said something real.

"My iphone is blowing up with group chats about me," Maya admitted.

Fox handed her a camera. "Put it on silent. Let's make something better."

They spent the afternoon documenting the dog, the abandoned gym, the parts of school nobody noticed. By sunset, Fox had posted their photos with a caption about finding beauty in forgotten places. The response wasn't pyramid-level viral, but it was real.

The next day, Chloe rolled her eyes at their new friendship. "She's playing you, Maya. Fox doesn't have real friends."

But as Maya watched Fox share her lunch with the mystery dog, she knew the truth. Some people climbed pyramids. Others built bridges.

And for the first time, Maya was exactly where she wanted to be.
