The Social Pyramid

Maya stood in the corner of Jake's basement, clutching a red plastic cup like it was a lifeline. She felt like a zombie—three hours of sleep, two AP exams, and now this party she'd promised Chloe she'd attend. The bass thrummed against her ribs.

"Your hair looks insane!" Chloe shouted over the music, gesturing at Maya's newly chopped bangs. "Did you actually do it?"

Maya nodded, self-consciously smoothing the wispy pieces that refused to cooperate. Freshly dyed purple and chopped on an existential Tuesday night impulse, her hair was her rebellion against being everyone's background character.

Then she saw him.

Tyler, the human embodiment of a pyramid scheme, leaned against the foosball table with that practiced athletic grin. "Yo, you ever heard of Verve?" he asked, launching into his pitch about some energy drink MLM that was "totally gonna blow up."

Maya's palms went clammy. She'd avoided his recruitment attempts all week. "I'm good, actually. My dad says—"

"Whatever, you're missing out." He turned to some freshman instead.

"He's such a capitalist zombie," Chloe whispered, linking her arm through Maya's. "Come on, Maya's friend's doing palms in the bathroom."

The bathroom line stretched down the hall. Inside, sat cross-legged on the bathmat, was Luna—the mystical transfer student who read tarot and wore rings on every finger.

"Next," Luna said, gesturing for Maya to extend her hand.

Maya hesitated, then offered her palm. Luna traced the lines with silver-polished fingernails, her expression unreadable.

"You're in the middle of something," Luna said quietly. "A transformation. You think you're invisible, but everyone's watching."

Maya's throat tightened. Was she that transparent?

"But." Luna looked up, eyes bright. "This line here?"—she tapped Maya's heart line—"you're about to stop waiting for permission to exist."

The compliment hit harder than any she'd ever received.

Back in the basement, Tyler was still working his pyramid scheme on a new victim. But something shifted. Maya caught sight of herself in the mirror—purple hair, bad bangs, slight smile.

She wasn't background character anymore.

"Zombies aren't real," she told Chloe suddenly. "But waking up is."

Chloe rolled her eyes. "Did Luna tell you that?"

"No." Maya grinned. "I think I just figured it out myself."
