The Social Pyramid

Maya's iphone buzzed against her nightstand at 11:47 PM, that familiar jingle that meant someone was talking about her in the group chat. Again.

She'd been at Northwood High for three months, and somehow she'd already secured her spot near the bottom of the social pyramid. Not rock bottom—that was reserved for kids who still brought lunchboxes and asked questions in class—but definitely basement level.

'PSA: Maya hooked up with Tyler at Sarah's party,' read the latest message from Chloe, the self-appointed queen of the freshman class.

Maya's stomach did that familiar twist. Total bull. She'd spent most of Sarah's party in the bathroom, having an existential crisis about her curls and wondering if she'd ever stop feeling like an imposter in her own life.

Her cat, Mochi, jumped onto her bed and head-butted her chin. Mochi didn't care that Chloe had 2,453 followers or that Maya's most viral TikTok had exactly 14 views. Mochi just wanted treats and occasionally to knock water bottles off nightstands.

'Maybe I should just transfer schools,' she whispered to Mochi's orange fur.

But then she remembered her older brother's advice: 'The social pyramid is built on insecurity. The people at the top are just better at pretending they're not terrified.'

Maya grabbed her iphone and typed: 'lol that's definitely not what happened but thanks for the creative writing practice'

Her thumb hovered over send. This was it—the moment she could either keep shrinking into herself or actually say something. She hit send.

Almost immediately: 'who asked' from someone she didn't even know.

But then, surprisingly: 'wait actually tyler was literally with his girlfriend all night' from someone else.

Chloe didn't reply.

The pyramid felt a little less steep that night. Mochi purred loudly, and Maya allowed herself to believe that maybe high school wasn't a fixed hierarchy but just a bunch of scared kids figuring it out, one rumor at a time.
