The Social Padel Scheme

padelpoolpyramid

Maya stood at the edge of the padel court, gripping the borrowed racquet like it might spontaneously combust. The popular kids—her invitation to their summer pool party hinged on this game.

"You got this, Maya!" Liam called from the other side. His grin was effortless, exactly like everything else about him. Rich kid problems, designer clothes, parents who owned a house with both a padel court AND an infinity pool.

The game started chaos. Maya hadn't played since middle school PE, but apparently that was "so cringe" to mention. She missed the ball entirely on her first swing.

"My bad," she muttered, face burning.

"No worries, we'll rotate!" Chloe, Liam's girlfriend, breezed past her. "Everything's a rotation at our school anyway."

That's when it hit Maya—the social pyramid. Freshman year, it had felt so obvious: the popular kids at the top, everyone else stacked below. But standing here, sweating through her Target shirt while everyone else wore matching athleisure sets from some brand she couldn't pronounce, she realized something. The pyramid wasn't about popularity. It was about who cared enough to maintain it.

She watched them between points—checking phones, fixing hair, maintaining the careful performance that made everything look so freaking effortless.

"You know what?" Maya said suddenly, interrupting Chloe's story about her "dreamy" vacation. "This is actually kind of... mid?"

Silence. Then Liam burst out laughing. "Finally! Someone says it!"

Wait, what?

"We only invited you because you literally rotted in AP Bio while we pretended to understand vectors," Liam admitted. "We needed someone who wouldn't make everything a competition."

Maya blinked. "So... this whole time—"

"The social pyramid's completely made up," Chloe said. "We're all just trying to survive high school without embarrassing ourselves. Which, by the way, you're winning at."

The game resumed, but something shifted. Maya stopped trying to prove herself and started actually playing. She even scored a point. Later, they all piled into the pool, designer clothes and all, and nobody cared.

That night, Maya scrolled through TikTok in bed, pausing on a post about school hierarchies. She smiled, saving it with the caption: "POV: You realize the pyramid was just a really elaborate group project that nobody wanted to do."
