The Sleepy Zombie's Secret

Lily loved exploring the Whispering Woods behind her house. One cloudy afternoon, she heard a strange sound. *Groan. Mumble. Shuffle.*

Lily hid behind an oak tree and peeked out. A creature stumbled through the fog. Its skin was greenish-gray, its eyes droopy, and it moved like its feet were made of heavy stones. A zombie!

But this zombie wasn't scary. It looked sad and terribly tired.

The zombie tripped over a root and sat down with a sigh that sounded like wind through hollow trees. Lily stepped out from behind the oak. The zombie looked up with sleepy eyes.

"Are you lost?" Lily asked bravely.

The zombie nodded slowly. "Hungry," it mumbled. "So very hungry."

Lily wasn't afraid anymore. "My name's Lily. What's yours?"

"Zzzzzzombie," the creature sighed, then corrected itself. "I mean, Zara. I'm Zara."

Lily sat beside her new friend. "Why are you so tired, Zara?"

Zara pointed at the gray sky. "The sun has been hiding for weeks. The Magic Garden is closed, and I can't get my sunshine vitamin. Without it, I get all sleepy and gray and everyone thinks I'm a zombie."

Lily's eyes widened. "A sunshine vitamin?"

"Yes!" Zara said, perking up a tiny bit. "The Moon Flowers bloom only when the sun returns. Their petals make the most wonderful sunshine potion."

Lily grabbed Zara's hand. "Then let's find the Magic Garden together!"

They searched high and low. Finally, in a hidden clearing, they found a garden full of silver flowers waiting for sunlight. Lily had an idea. She opened her backpack and pulled out her grandmother's special flashlight—the one with the warm, yellow light that felt just like sunshine.

She shone it on the Moon Flowers. *Pop! Pop! POP!* The flowers bloomed instantly, glowing golden.

Zara gently picked a petal and ate it. Color flooded back into her cheeks. Her eyes sparkled bright purple. She jumped up and danced.

"Thank you, Lily!" Zara cheered. "You're my best friend!"

Lily grinned. "And you're mine, zombie or not!"

They walked home together, neither sleepy nor gray anymore. And every cloudy day after that, Lily brought her sunshine flashlight to the woods, just in case her friend needed another vitamin boost.
