The Sleepy Zombie's Magic Vitamin
Lily loved her grandpa's old straw hat. It smelled like sunshine and adventures. But today, the hat was missing!
"I saw it near the big palm tree," said her friend Tommy, pointing to the edge of the playground.
Lily and Tommy crept toward the swaying palm tree. Underneath, someone was snoring loudly.
It was a zombie! But not a scary one. This zombie wore bright purple pants and a striped shirt. His green skin looked more like mint ice cream than anything spooky.
"Excuse me," Lily whispered. "Is that your hat?"
The zombie opened one eye. "Oh! Hello there." He sat up, stretching. "I'm Zim. And yes, I found this lovely hat blowing in the wind. Isn't it splendid?"
Zim put on the hat. It looked ridiculous and wonderful all at once.
"Why are you sleeping under a palm tree?" Tommy asked.
Zim sighed. "I'm so tired all the time. I've been a zombie for three hundred years, and I just can't seem to wake up properly. I sleep-walk through everything."
Lily's eyes widened. "I know what you need! My mom says vitamin D gives you energy. You get it from sunshine!"
"But I'm ALWAYS in the sunshine," Zim said sadly.
"Not the RIGHT kind," said a tiny voice. A miniature bull stepped out from behind the tree! He was only as tall as Lily's knee, with golden fur and kind eyes.
"I'm Barnaby," the bull said. "Zim needs MAGIC vitamin D. It comes from sun-ripe coconuts that only grow on palm trees where friends meet."
Lily, Tommy, Zim, and Barnaby looked at each other. Friends! They were all friends now!
Zim reached up and picked three golden coconuts. They cracked them open and shared the sweet, sunshine-filled milk inside.
Something magical happened. Zim's green skin began to glow softly. His eyes sparkled. He jumped up and danced a happy jig.
"I'm awake! I'm REALLY awake!" Zim cheered. "And it's all because of friendship and magic vitamins!"
From that day on, Zim never slept through another adventure. He wore his straw hat proudly, and every sunny afternoon, the four friends — Lily, Tommy, Zim, and Barnaby the bull — met under the palm tree. They discovered that the best magic of all wasn't in coconuts or vitamins, but in the joy of true friendship.
And sometimes, if you look closely, you can still see them dancing there, wearing silly hats and sharing golden coconuts, under the swaying palm tree where friendship first worked its magic.
