The Sleepy Sphinx's Secret

Lily was the best spy in her whole third-grade class. She had a magnifying glass, a detective notebook, and special spy sunglasses that made everything look purple. But today, Lily found something that wasn't in her spy handbook at all.

Behind the old library, where nobody ever went, Lily discovered a giant stone sphinx. It had the body of a lion and the face of a wise old woman. But this sphinx wasn't like the ones in books — it was wearing fuzzy pink slippers!

"Excuse me," Lily said, trying to be brave. "Are you a real sphinx?"

The sphinx yawned, stretching its giant stone paws. "I am, but I'm so tired. I've been guarding this library's secrets for three thousand years, and I just need a really long nap. But every time I fall asleep, something wakes me up!"

Lily clicked her spy sunglasses. "I can help! I'm a professional spy. I'll find out what's disturbing your sleep."

That night, Lily hid behind a bush with her flashlight and magnifying glass. At midnight, she heard something: *scraaatch, scraaatch, bump, scraaatch.*

A green zombie was trying to climb the library steps! But this wasn't a scary zombie like in movies. It was a very confused zombie boy wearing pajamas, dragging a book bag behind him.

"Book... need... book..." the zombie mumbled sadly.

Lily stepped forward. "Who are you?"

The zombie jumped. "I'm Zane! I was a regular kid, but I fell asleep reading in the library, and nobody woke me up for three hundred years. Now I'm a library zombie, and I just want to finish my book report!"

The sphinx woke up again, grumpy. "What's all this noise?"

"Wait!" Lily said. "I have an idea!"

She led Zane to the sphinx. "Zane needs help reading, and you're the wisest creature ever. Maybe you could be his reading buddy? That way, Zane stops making noise, and you won't be lonely guarding the library all by yourself!"

The sphinx thought about this. "I do love stories. And I haven't had anyone to talk to for... well, forever."

So every night, while the library was closed, Zane the zombie and the sphinx read books together. Zane was a little slow, but the sphinx was patient. And Lily, the best spy in third grade, visited them often to bring new books.

Sometimes, Lily realized, the best adventures aren't about solving mysteries. They're about making friends with the most unexpected people — even sphinxes in fuzzy slippers and zombies who just want to finish their homework.
