The Sleepy Sea Zombie

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house by the ocean. Every morning, she would sit on the porch and wave her palm frond fan, watching the waves crash against the shore. But today, something strange was happening in the garden pond.

Grandma's goldfish, Finnegan, was floating upside down!

"Oh no!" Lily cried, rushing to the water's edge. "Finnegan is a zombie goldfish!"

She had learned about zombies in movies—creatures that moved slowly and didn't seem alive. Finnegan wasn't moving at all. His orange scales sparkled in the sunlight, but his tiny fish mouth wasn't bubbling like usual.

Grandma chuckled softly. "He's not a zombie, sweetie. He's just taking a morning nap. Fish sleep with their eyes open, you know."

Lily dipped her palm leaf into the water, gently touching Finnegan's side. Suddenly, the most magical thing happened! Finnegan flipped over and darted around the pond, creating tiny rainbows in the water.

"He was playing a trick on me!" Lily laughed. "You're not a zombie fish at all—you're a magical trickster!"

That night, Lily dreamed of undersea kingdoms where fish wore tiny crowns and palm trees grew upside down from the ocean ceiling. When she woke up, she ran to the pond with a special gift—a colorful seashell she had found on the beach.

"For you, Finnegan," she whispered, dropping it into the water. "For being my funny, not-really-a-zombie friend."

And every summer after that, Lily and Finnegan would play their favorite game. She would pretend to be sad, and he would float upside down like a zombie fish, then suddenly swim around happily when she "magically" woke him up with her palm leaf wand.

Sometimes the best friends are the ones who make you laugh, even when they're just pretending to be zombies.
