The Sleepy Pool Guardian

Lily loved the shimmering blue pool behind her house. Every morning, she'd peek through the fence, watching the sunlight dance across the water like tiny diamonds. But today was different.

She was running late—running SO late—that her flip-flops flap-flap-flapped as she sprinted toward the gate. Her friend Marco was already there, his eyes wide with excitement.

"You have to see it," Marco whispered, pointing toward the deep end. "It rises up every afternoon at exactly three o'clock."

Lily gasped. There, in the middle of the pool, something was slowly emerging from the water. Green skin. Arms reaching forward. A slow, shuffling walk.

"It's a zombie!" Lily squealed, but she wasn't scared. She was CURIOUS.

The creature climbed out of the pool, dripping wet, and blinked its enormous eyes. It looked like a lumpy potato with mossy hair and the friendliest smile Lily had ever seen.

"Hello," it said in a bubbly voice. "I'm Zed. I guard this pool from dust bunnies and loneliness."

Lily and Marco stared. Zed wasn't scary at all! He was magical.

"Watch this," Zed said, and he did a silly dance, running in wobbly circles until he tumbled backward into the pool with a giant SPLASH.

The children laughed until their tummies hurt. Every day that summer, Zed would emerge from the pool at three o'clock, ready for afternoon adventures. He told them stories about underwater kingdoms and showed them how to blow the biggest bubbles.

And the moral? Even the things that seem strange or different at first glance might just be the most wonderful friends you'll ever make—if you're brave enough to say hello.
