The Sleepy Knight's Riddle

Lily loved exploring the magical forest behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a trail of glittering butterflies until she reached an ancient stone archway.

There, perched atop a marble pedestal, sat the most magnificent creature Lily had ever seen. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise human. A sphinx!

"Welcome, young adventurer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to solve my riddle."

Lily's heart raced with excitement. "I'm ready!"

"What walks on two legs in the morning, four legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" the sphinx asked, her golden eyes twinkling.

Lily thought hard. She knew this riddle! "A human! Babies crawl on all fours, adults walk on two legs, and old people use canes!"

"Correct!" The sphinx purred. "You may enter the Hidden Garden."

But as Lily stepped forward, a groaning sound echoed from behind the bushes. Out stumbled a knight in rusty armor, moving stiffly with arms outstretched.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind the sphinx.

The sphinx laughed gently. "Not quite, dear child. That's Sir Simon the Sleepy. He's been sleepwalking for centuries searching for the perfect snack to wake him up."

Lily's fear melted into curiosity. In her pocket, she found something orange and round — a tangerine from breakfast! She approached the sleeping knight carefully.

"Sir Simon?" Lily whispered, holding out the orange fruit. "Would you like this?"

The knight's eyes snapped open. "Ooh! Citrus!" He took a big bite, smiled, and stood up straight. "Delightful! Thank you, young lady!"

The sphinx nodded approvingly. "You see, Lily? Things aren't always what they seem. A little kindness and an orange can solve almost any problem."

Lily learned that day that courage means helping others, even when they seem strange or scary at first. And sometimes, the greatest adventures start with something as simple as sharing fruit with a friend.
