The Sleepy Guardian's Pool

Lily loved the old stone pool behind her grandmother's house. The water shimmered like liquid silver in the moonlight, and strange flowers bloomed around its edges, opening only at night.

One warm summer evening, Lily heard soft splashing. She peeked through the garden gate and gasped. A golden sphinx with emerald eyes sat beside the pool, dipping its paw into the magical water.

"Hello, small one," the sphinx purred, its voice like gentle wind chimes. "I am Cleopatra, guardian of this enchanted pool. But I'm so tired..."

"Why are you sleepy?" Lily asked, stepping closer.

"My sister Sphinx — my twin — has fallen into a deep magical sleep. She became like a zombie, walking and moving but not really *there*, trapped between dreaming and waking. I need fresh morning dew from the moonflowers to wake her, but I'm too weary to fly."

Lily's heart swelled with courage. "I can help!"

Cleopatra smiled. "But you must be quick. The dew vanishes at dawn, and my sister grows weaker each day."

Lily started running through the garden, her feet light as thistledown. She gathered dewdrops from the glowing moonflowers, catching them in a silver vial the sphinx gave her. Her golden hair flew behind her like a banner as she raced against time.

When she returned, the sphinx's sister stumbled toward them, her eyes clouded like fog, moving like a zombie indeed. Lily carefully poured the dew over the sleeping sphinx's paws.

The sister blinked, her emerald eyes clearing instantly. "Lily? Cleopatra?" She shook her head and smiled. "I was stuck in such a strange dream..."

The three new friends sat beside the enchanted pool as the first rays of dawn touched the water.

"Thank you, Lily," both sphinxes purred together.

Lily learned that courage and kindness are the strongest magic of all. And every moonlit night after, she visited her sphinx friends by the magical pool, ready for whatever adventure might come running their way.
