The Sleepy Goldfish's Secret

Lily loved swimming in her grandmother's pond. Every summer day, she'd slip into the cool water and pretend she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom. The pond was her magical world.

One afternoon, something strange caught her eye. A little goldfish floated near the surface, barely moving. Its orange scales glimmered in the sunlight, but it swam so slowly that Lily wondered if it was a zombie goldfish! She'd read about zombies in stories — creatures that moved slowly and seemed half-asleep.

"Are you okay, little friend?" Lily whispered, cupping the fish in her hands. The goldfish didn't respond, just kept drifting like a leaf on the water.

Lily's grandmother appeared beside her. "That's Goldie," she said gently. "She's not a zombie, sweetheart. She's just lonely and tired. Goldfish need friends to feel happy and energetic."

Lily's eyes widened. "So she's not... magical undead?"

Grandmother laughed. "No, my dear. She's a regular fish who needs love. Look — there's her friend!" A second goldfish darted through the water, flashing like a tiny flame.

Lily watched as the energetic fish nudged Goldie. Suddenly, the sleepy goldfish perked up! Her fins fluttered, and soon both fish were swimming together in playful circles.

"They're dancing!" Lily clapped.

"That's friendship's magic," her grandmother said. "Sometimes we all feel a bit like zombies — tired and slow. But having friends makes everything better."

That night, Lily swam in the pond under the stars, imagining she was swimming with Goldie and her friend. She learned something wonderful: even the smallest creatures need friends, and that's the most real magic of all.

The zombie goldfish wasn't a zombie at all. She was just waiting for someone to notice she needed a friend. And from that day on, Lily always made sure her goldfish friends never swam alone again.
