The Sleepy Garden Sphinx
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's magical garden in Hawaii. Every morning, she would walk beneath the swaying palm trees and search for adventure.
One sunny day, Lily spotted something strange near the papaya tree. A slow-moving creature shuffled through the flowers, its eyes half-closed, arms stretched forward, moaning softly.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind a coconut. But then she looked closer.
The zombie stopped and yawned. Then it spoke in a rumbly voice: "I am not a zombie. I am the Garden Sphinx, and I have been awake for seven nights straight guarding the Dream Papaya."
Lily peeked out. The creature looked like a mix between a lion and a wise old owl, with sparkly wings.
"Why are you so sleepy?" she asked.
"Because," the Sphinx explained, "this papaya only blooms once every hundred years, and its fruit makes the sweetest dreams for children. I must protect it from the Dream Thieves who come at midnight."
Lily's eyes widened. "But you're too tired to protect anything!"
The Sphinx nodded sadly. "True. Without rest, I will fail tonight."
"I'll help!" Lily volunteered. "I can stay awake with you."
Together, they waited. When moonlight filled the garden, shadowy Dream Thieves appeared. But Lily had an idea. She began telling stories—funny ones about dancing chickens and brave little fish.
The Sphinx laughed and laughed. And laughing kept them both awake! The Dream Thieves, confused by all the joy, floated away.
When morning came, the papaya glowed golden. The Sphinx sliced it open, and inside each fruit were tiny, sparkling dreams.
"You saved them," the Sphinx said, giving Lily the first slice. "And you taught me something—friendship is stronger than any magic."
Lily took a bite and smiled. Sometimes, the scariest creatures just need a friend, and the biggest adventures come from helping others.
