The Sleepy Garden Friend
Lily crept through her backyard on tiptoes, her faithful dog Barnaby trotting quietly beside her. She was on a Very Important Mission — she was a spy!
The moon shone bright as a silver coin above. Lily and Barnaby were investigating the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers. Every morning, Mom's garden looked different. Sunflowers that had been leaning right would be leaning left. Pink tulips would be in a completely new spot!
"Shh, Barnaby," Lily whispered, pressing one finger to her lips. The golden retriever wagged his tail softly, his big brown eyes shining.
Suddenly, they heard it: *SCRAAAAPE. SCRAAAAPE. SCRAAAAPE.*
Lily's heart thumped like a little drum. Behind the big oak tree, something was moving. Something SLOW.
She peeked around the trunk and gasped.
A zombie was shuffling through the garden patch!
But this zombie wasn't scary at all. It was made of old twisted vines and dried leaves, with glowing green eyes like fireflies. It moved with a funny wobble, step... drag... step... drag...
The creature picked up a fallen baby bird that had tumbled from its nest. Gently, it placed the bird back on its branch, tucking twigs around it to make it safe.
Then it spotted a wilting daisy. The zombie patted soil around the flower's roots. The daisy perked right up!
"You're helping the garden!" Lily cried.
The vine-creature jumped. It looked shy, rubbing its leafy hands together nervously.
"I'm Lily, and this is Barnaby." She stepped closer. "Are you... a zombie?"
The creature nodded, then shook its head. It made a sound like wind through leaves: *whoooosh whoooosh.*
"A... sleeping friend?" Lily guessed. "Like you were asleep in the ground and now you're awake?"
The zombie nodded enthusiastically, smiling with its vine-mouth.
Barnaby bounded over and gave the zombie a big lick on its knobby knee. The creature's green eyes sparkled like fairy lights. It patted Barnaby's head with gentle leafy fingers.
"Will you be our friend?" Lily asked. "We can help you take care of the garden at night!"
The zombie did a happy little wiggle dance.
And so every night after that, the little spy, her dog, and their vine-covered friend worked together in the moonlit garden. Lily learned that even things that seem strange at first can be the kindest friends of all.
Sometimes the best discoveries aren't secrets at all — they're just friends waiting to be found.
