The Sleepy Garden Friend
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden every summer. It was the most magical place she knew, with flowers that seemed to sing in the breeze and trees that whispered secrets to anyone who listened.
One afternoon, while exploring behind the old shed, Lily spotted something strange. A small, gray creature was curled up among the pumpkins, snoring softly. It had patchy fur, one ear that flopped over, and the slowest, sleepiest movements Lily had ever seen.
"A zombie!" her cousin Tommy had called it when she described it later. But Lily didn't think that word fit at all. Zombies were supposed to be scary, and this little creature was just... tired.
Every day, Lily brought the creature treats. It loved oranges more than anything, carefully peeling them with slow, careful claws before eating each segment with delight. Its eyes would light up the same bright orange as the fruit.
Then came the day everything changed. A squirrel had dropped something important on the old telephone cable behind the garden. Lily watched from her window as a baby bird chirped sadly, unable to reach its nest that was now blocked.
The sleepy gray creature noticed too. With surprising determination, it slowly made its way toward the cable. Lily held her breath. The creature stretched and reached, moving with careful purpose along the cable. It wasn't clumsy or scary at all — it was gentle and kind.
Finally, the baby bird could return home safely. The creature trotted back to its pumpkin patch, looking pleased with itself.
"You're not a zombie," Lily whispered, scratching it behind its floppy ear. "You're a guardian. A sleepy, orange-loving garden guardian."
From that day on, Lily knew the truth: sometimes things that seem strange or scary are actually just misunderstood friends waiting for someone to see them for who they really are.
And every summer, she still brings oranges to her friend, who guards the garden with slow, steady love.
