The Sleepy Bear's Secret Friend

bearzombierunning

Benji loved exploring the forest behind his house. Every day after school, he would race through the trees, collecting interesting rocks and chasing butterflies.

One crisp autumn afternoon, Benji heard a strange sound coming from behind an old oak tree. "Grooooaaan," it went, followed by a slow shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.

Benji peeked around the tree and gasped. A small bear was sitting there, but not like any bear he'd ever seen. This bear's fur was sticking up in messy tufts, its eyes were half-closed, and it moved in slow, jerky motions — almost like a zombie!

But instead of feeling scared, Benji felt curious. "Hello?" he whispered. "Are you okay?"

The zombie bear blinked slowly. "I... I'm Zombearina," it said in a dreamy voice. "I'm not actually a zombie. I'm just very, very tired because I woke up too early from my winter sleep. My legs feel all wobbly and slow."

Benji smiled. "I can help! My mom says hot cocoa wakes anyone up!"

Every day for a week, Benji brought Zombearina treats — warm honey bread, berries, and sometimes even thermoses of hot cocoa. And every day, the bear moved a little faster, her eyes grew brighter, and her messy fur smoothed down.

Soon, Zombearina wasn't shambling like a zombie anymore. She could run and play! One magical evening, under a sky full of twinkling stars, they had the best race ever. Benji was fast, but Zombearina was strong, and they crossed the finish line together, laughing so hard that all the forest animals came to see what was so funny.

"You're not a zombie at all," Benji said, hugging his new friend. "You're just a bear who needed a little help waking up."

Zombearina smiled, her brown eyes shining. "And you're a boy who didn't judge a book by its cover. That's the best magic of all."

From that day on, whenever Benji went running in the forest, a happy bear ran right beside him — no longer wobbly or slow, but full of energy and friendship. And sometimes, just for fun, they would play zombie tag, shuffling and shambling together until they collapsed in giggles.

Benji learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things just need a little kindness. And friendship? Well, that's the most powerful magic in the world.
