The Sleepwalking Zombie's Midnight Garden
Leo lay in bed, his golden retriever Rusty curled at his feet, when he heard a strange thumping sound from the garden. Through the window, moonlight spilled onto something peculiar—a zombie! But this wasn't like the ones in movies. This zombie had round, rosy cheeks and wore a flowered apron. She was sleepwalking, bumping gently into the garden fence.
Leo grabbed his flashlight, Rusty bouncing beside him. "Don't be scared," he whispered to his dog. But Rusty wasn't scared. His tail wagged furiously as he approached the zombie, who woke with a start.
"Oh my!" she blinked, her eyes sparkling like morning dew. "I'm Zola, and I'm completely lost." Her voice sounded like wind chimes.
Suddenly, the ground rumbled. A magnificent bull with a coat like storm clouds and horns made of silver starlight appeared. He looked fierce, but his eyes were kind.
"That's Barnaby!" Zola cheered. "He's the guardian of the Midnight Garden!"
Barnaby lowered his massive head. Zola explained she'd been wandering in her sleep again. "My dream magic sometimes takes me on adventures."
"You can stay with us," Leo offered without hesitation.
Barnaby nodded approvingly and led them through a hidden gate into a garden where flowers sang and trees whispered secrets. The bull used his starlight horns to light glowing pathways, while Rusty chased enchanted butterflies that left trails of glitter.
Zola showed Leo how to grow friendship-seeds—magic beans that bloomed wherever kindness was shared. "Being different doesn't mean you're scary," she said. "Sometimes it just means you're magical."
They planted seeds together, and instantly, flowers shaped like smiling faces burst from the earth. Rusty barked joyfully, dancing around the new blooms.
When dawn approached, Barnaby carried Zola home on his broad back. "Come back anytime," the bull told Leo. "The Midnight Garden welcomes kind hearts."
Leo climbed back into bed, Rusty already snoring softly. In his pocket, three friendship-seeds glowed softly. Somewhere, a zombie who wasn't scary at all was probably already planning her next magical adventure. And Leo smiled, knowing that the most wonderful friends are sometimes the ones you least expect.
