The Sleepwalking Sphinx
Lily loved visiting Grandpa's house by the lake. Every night, she heard strange sounds—*shuffle, shuffle, pat*—coming from downstairs.
One moonlit night, she tiptoed to investigate. There was Grandpa, sleepwalking! His white *hair* stood straight up like he'd been struck by lightning. His arms stretched out stiff in front of him. He looked just like a *zombie* from her storybooks!
But this zombie didn't want brains. He wanted *swimming*!
Grandpa shuffled right out the back door and waded into the cool lake. Lily followed, splashing quietly behind him. The water sparkled with starlight.
Suddenly, the water began to glow. A magnificent creature rose from the depths—a *sphinx* with wings like liquid moonlight and eyes that held all the wisdom of the ancient world.
"I am the Guardian of Dreams," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle ripples. "Your grandfather visits me every night, seeking the swims he took in his youth."
Lily watched in wonder as Grandpa, still asleep, did graceful laps across the magical water. He moved like a champion *running* through silk.
"But why does he look so... zombie-like?" Lily asked.
The sphinx smiled. "Because between dreams and waking, we are all a little clumsy. Your grandfather's heart remembers being young and strong. His body just needs to catch up."
The sphinx offered Lily a choice: "You can wake him, or let him finish his midnight swim."
Lily thought about how happy Grandpa looked, gliding through the starlit water. "Let him swim."
"Wise choice," the sphinx said. "Dreams keep our hearts young."
Lily held Grandpa's hand as they walked back to bed, his white hair now wet and smooth. She tucked him in, and he mumbled something about winning a race.
The next morning, Grandpa ate his pancakes with extra energy. "I had the most wonderful dream," he said. "I was swimming like I used to, before my legs got slow."
Lily winked. "Maybe it wasn't just a dream, Grandpa. Maybe some magic helps us remember who we really are."
That night, Lily left her window open, just in case the sphinx came by for another midnight swim. Some secrets are better when shared with magic.
