The Sleepwalking Sphinx

Lily loved to spy on the magical creatures that lived in the garden behind her house. Every morning, she peeked through the fence, watching fairies dance and trolls play tag.

One hot afternoon, Lily spotted something strange. A giant sphinx with golden wings was sleepwalking in circles! The creature stumbled toward the pond, looking confused and hungry.

"Oh no!" Lily whispered. "He'll walk right into the water!"

The sphinx wasn't really a zombie—though his eyes were glazed and he shuffled like one. He was just under a magic spell that made him sleepwalk whenever the sun was too hot.

Lily grabbed her favorite snack from the kitchen: a bright orange papaya. Her grandmother had taught her that papaya had special waking-up magic inside it.

"Mr. Sphinx!" she called, climbing over the fence. "Wake up!"

The sphinx kept walking toward the deep water of the pond. Lily ran as fast as she could. She held out the papaya, and its sweet smell filled the air.

"Yum?" The sphinx sniffed. His golden eyes opened wide.

"Eat this!" Lily said. "It will break the sleep spell!"

The sphinx took the papaya gently with his paw. "Thank you, little friend," he rumbled after taking a bite. "I've been walking in circles for three days!"

"Why didn't anyone help you?" Lily asked.

"Everyone was scared," the sphinx said sadly. "They thought I was a zombie. They ran away instead of asking questions."

Lily thought about this. "Sometimes things that seem scary are just misunderstood."

The sphinx smiled. "You're brave and kind. Will you be my friend?"

"Yes!" Lily cheered. From that day on, she never just spied on magical creatures. She learned their names, shared her papayas, and always helped first—no matter how strange someone seemed.

The garden became a place of friendship, where everyone belonged. And Lily? She was no longer just a spy. She was a hero, one papaya at a time.
