The Sleepwalking Guardian
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's cottage by the stream. Every summer, she'd spend hours exploring the magical woods behind the house. But one evening, as the sun painted the sky orange and pink, she saw something strange.
A figure was stumbling through the trees, arms stretched straight out, groaning softly. Lily gasped—it looked just like a zombie from her storybooks! Her heart raced as she ducked behind a berry bush. But then she noticed something odd. The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was wearing fuzzy blue pajamas with tiny ducks on them.
"Hello?" Lily called out bravely.
The zombie blinked and stopped moving. "Oh, hello there," said a kind voice. It was Mr. Willowby, the old librarian from town! "I'm afraid I was sleepwalking again. My wife says I turn into a bit of a zombie when I don't sleep well."
Lily giggled. Just then, a clever red fox popped out from behind a tree. The fox had something shiny in its mouth—a golden pocket watch!
"That's my watch!" Mr. Willowby exclaimed. "I must have dropped it yesterday."
But the fox didn't run away. Instead, it trotted over to the babbling brook and set the watch gently on a flat rock by the water's edge. Then it looked back at them expectantly.
"I think the fox wants us to follow," Lily said.
They followed the clever fox along the stream, past wildflowers that glowed in the twilight, until they reached a hidden clearing. There, reflected perfectly in the still water, was something magical—fireflies dancing like tiny stars, making shapes in the air.
"It's beautiful," Lily whispered.
"The fox shows this only to kind hearts," Mr. Willowby said, smiling. "I'm glad my zombie-walking led us here."
From that day on, Lily learned that things that seem scary at first might turn out to be wonderful. And every summer, she and Mr. Willowby would visit the fox by the water, never knowing what magical surprise the clever creature would reveal next.
Sometimes the best adventures start with something surprising—and end with friendship.
