The Skyward Cable

Lily loved to sit on her back porch, watching the old **cable** that stretched from her house to the ancient oak tree across the field. Her grandmother said it used to hold telephone wires long ago, but now it was just a mysterious rope that disappeared into the clouds.

One sparkling summer evening, Lily's golden **dog** Barnaby bounded outside, his tail wagging like a metronome. He wasn't alone—her sleek black **cat** Luna padded gracefully beside him, something that never happened. Usually, these two chased each other up trees!

"Look!" Lily gasped. Barnaby was barking at something hanging from the old cable—a glowing **baseball**, pulsing with gentle light like a tiny moon.

Luna leaped gracefully from porch rail to fence, then onto the cable itself. The cat walked perfectly balanced as if on solid ground, reaching toward the glowing sphere. Barnaby whined with excitement, bouncing on his hind legs.

Grandmother appeared beside Lily, smiling. "That's no ordinary baseball, dear. That's a Starball. It fell from the night sky and got caught on the old cable. Only animals with pure hearts can retrieve it."

Luna batted gently at the Starball, and it drifted downward like a feather. Barnaby caught it softly in his mouth, carrying it carefully to Lily. The ball's light swirled with colors—emerald, amethyst, sapphire.

"Make a wish," Grandmother whispered.

Lily wished that Barnaby and Luna would always be friends, that they'd have adventures together forever.

The Starball floated upward, trailing silver sparkles, then shot into the sky like a falling star in reverse. That night, Lily dreamed of her dog and cat dancing among constellations.

From then on, Barnaby and Luna were the best of friends, sleeping curled together like a yin-yang symbol. And sometimes, on magical evenings, Lily could still see something glowing on the old cable, waiting to grant another wish to someone with a heart full of wonder.
