The Sky Baseball
Lily sat on her front porch, holding her favorite baseball. It was old and scratched, but she loved it anyway. She tossed it gently in the air. Catch. Toss. Catch.
Suddenly, the baseball began to glow golden. Lily gasped. It floated from her hand and hovered right in front of her nose.
"Throw me!" a tiny voice squeaked.
Lily blinked. "Did you just... talk?"
"Throw me to the sky!" the baseball insisted.
Lily shrugged and threw with all her might. The ball soared higher and higher, glowing brighter and brighter until—POP! It turned into a shimmering doorway floating in the air.
A girl with silver hair and eyes like twinkling stars peeked through. "I'm Nova! Come play!"
Lily stepped through the doorway and gasped. She was in the Sky Kingdom, where clouds were as bouncy as trampolines and the sun was a friendly golden lion waving at her.
"Let's go swimming!" Nova laughed, grabbing Lily's hand.
"In the air?" Lily asked.
"Trust me!"
They jumped onto a fluffy pink cloud and SPLASH! The air felt like warm, bubbly water. Lily was swimming through the sky, giggling as she did backstrokes past rainbows.
"Want to play padel?" Nova asked, pulling out two glowing paddles. Instead of a ball, they used a bouncing star.
Lily had never played anything so fun. The star zoomed and sparkled every time they hit it. "This is the best game ever!"
"You're my new friend!" Nova beamed.
Something warm bloomed in Lily's chest. She had never made a friend so quickly before.
The sun lion roared gently. "Time to go home, little one."
"Will I see you again?" Lily asked Nova.
"Whenever you throw your baseball!" Nova promised, handing Lily a small glowing stone. "Keep this, and you'll always find your way back."
Lily stepped through the doorway and landed back on her porch. Her baseball looked ordinary again, but now it sparkled with tiny golden flecks.
That night, Lily tucked the stone under her pillow. She learned that the best adventures find you when you least expect them—and that a true friend can be found anywhere, even in the clouds.
She couldn't wait for tomorrow's game.
