The Sink or Swim Text

waterhairiphonecatpool

The pool water glittered like liquid diamonds, mocking me from below. I stood at the edge of Tyler's summer party, clutching my iPhone like a lifeline, my carefully styled curls already starting to frizz in the humidity.

"You coming in or what?" Tyler called, surrounded by his loud, perfect friend group. They splashed and laughed like they belonged in a teen movie, while I felt like the awkward extra.

My thumbs hovered over my screen. *Should I text Maya? No, that's pathetic.* I'd been crushing on Tyler since freshman year, and tonight was supposed to be my moment. But instead of cannonballing into the deep end with everyone else, I was frozen.

Then disaster struck.

Shadow—Tyler's sleek black cat—streaked past, chased by some little cousin. Shadow leaped... and crashed straight into me.

My iPhone flew.

Time moved in sickening slow motion. The phone arced through the air, catching sunlight like a shooting star, before plunging into the pool with a pathetic splash.

Everyone stopped. The laughter died.

"My phone!" I shrieked, suddenly forgetting all about Tyler, about my anxiety, about looking cool. I dove in, clothes and all, grasping until my fingers brushed the case. I surfaced, dripping wet, my hair plastered to my face like a drowned rat's, holding my phone aloft like Excalibur.

Silence. Then someone started clapping.

"Ten points for Gryffindor!" Maya yelled from the poolside.

Tyler swam over, grinning. "That was legendary, honestly."

I laughed—the real kind, not the fake giggle I'd been planning all week. My phone was probably fried, my hair was wrecked, and I looked like a mess.

But somehow, diving in after a stupid phone broke something loose inside me. I'd spent so long overthinking everything—my outfit, my hair, my texts—that I'd forgotten how to just exist.

"Guess I'm all in now," I said, shaking water from my eyes.

"Bro, you went full NPC mode," someone joked, and I didn't even care.

For the first time all night, I wasn't watching from the edge. I was in the pool, surrounded by bobbing heads and splashing friends, and the water felt amazing.
