The Signal

Jordan's life ended the moment his iPhone slipped from his pocket into Camp Wabanna's 'scary' outhouse toilet. Three days of wilderness therapy camp, no signal, no Instagram, no DM from Maya asking if he'd like her Snapchat.

His cabinmates were already sizing him up. Tyrell with his too-perfect dad sneakers. Paige who definitely vlogged her 'experience.' Chloe reading that thick book like she wasn't performing. Jordan adjusted his beanie. He could survive this. He'd just vibe.

Day two: Jordan discovered the dog. A stray Golden mix, skinny but hopeful, lurking near the mess hall. Jordan shared his apple slice. The dog—Champ, obviously—became his accomplice. They explored the woods together, away from Tyrell's annoying laugh and Paige's constant filming.

Then came the bear encounter.

Jordan and Champ were deep in the trees when he heard it: that heavy, purposeful rustle. A massive black bear emerged, maybe fifty feet away. Jordan's brain screamed RUN but his legs locked. The bear huffed, pawing the ground.

Champ growled, stepping between Jordan and the bear. The tiny dog vs the 300-pound beast. Jordan grabbed a fallen branch, waving it wildly. 'HEY! BEAR! GO!' His voice cracked. The bear eyed them, huffed again, then lumbered off.

Jordan collapsed against a tree, heart hammering. Champ licked his face. In that moment, Jordan realized something: he wasn't thinking about his iPhone. He wasn't performing coolness. He was just alive, terrified and grateful.

Walking back, Jordan saw Tyrell and Paige clustered by the main lodge, phones out. 'Bro, you missed it!' Tyrell called. 'Coach was gonna let us call home!' Jordan just nodded. Whatever.

That night, Jordan sat on the cabin porch with Champ at his feet. No Instagram, no signal. Just the weird, terrifying possibility that maybe he was actually becoming someone real. And maybe that someone didn't need a phone to prove it.
