The Shallow End

The water in the infinity pool was impossibly blue, a synthetic gemstone spilling into the skyline of Dubai. Elena sat at the edge, legs submerged, watching the ripples distort her reflection. At forty-two, she'd become someone she didn't recognize—a corporate spy who sold trade secrets to the highest bidder, justifying it as survival in an economy that had chewed her up and spit her out a decade ago.

The man beside her passed a drink across the small table. "You're thinking about him again."

"I'm not," she lied. Marcus had been her handler, her lover, her mistake. Now he was the target, and tomorrow she'd deliver the documents that would destroy his career.

"It's just another pyramid scheme, El. His company, mine, all of it." David's voice was gentle. He was the one constant thing, the colleague who'd become something more without either of them acknowledging it. "These corporate hierarchies always collapse."

She looked at him—really looked. The gray threading his temples, the weariness behind his eyes that mirrored her own. They were two people who'd lost their moral compass somewhere between the recession and their mid-thirties.

"I'm tired, David."

"I know."

"What if we just... didn't? What if we walked away from the whole rotting structure?"

He considered this, swirling his drink. "We could. Sell everything, move somewhere small. Open that bookstore you used to talk about."

The sun was setting now, casting everything in gold and shadow. For the first time in years, Elena felt something besides cynicism. Hope, terrifying and fragile.

Then her phone buzzed on the table.

They both looked at it. The notification from Marcus: *Got the files. Thanks for everything.*

She'd already sent them. Automated delivery, set days ago, before this moment, before the possibility of something real.

The water lapped against her legs, indifferent. She'd made her choice when she wasn't looking, and now the current would take her where it would.
