The Shadow Who Wanted to Swim
Lila loved running more than anything. Every afternoon, she would lace up her sparkly blue sneakers and race through Meadowvale Park, her braids flying behind her like ribbons in the wind. But Lila didn't have anyone to share her adventures with. All the other children were too busy with video games and tablets.
One golden afternoon, as Lila sat by the old willow tree to rest, she noticed something strange. Her shadow was stretching and wiggling all by itself!
"I wish I could swim like the fish in the pond," her shadow said in a voice like rustling leaves.
Lila gasped. "You can talk?"
"I'm your shadow friend!" the shadow said happily. "I've been waiting for you to notice me. But shadows can't swim without our person. Will you help me?"
Lila thought about the crystal-clear pond at the edge of the park. She had always been afraid to go in too deep.
"I'm not very good at swimming," Lila admitted.
"That's okay!" her shadow friend said. "We'll learn together! Running made your legs strong. Now it's time to make your heart brave too."
Hand in shadow-hand, they walked to the pond. The water sparkled like diamonds in the setting sun. Lila dipped her toes in. Cool and fresh, like mint!
"I'll be right beside you," her shadow promised.
Lila took a deep breath and slipped into the water. At first, she paddled nervously. But then she felt her shadow gliding beneath her, steady and sure. Something magical happened—the water didn't feel scary anymore. It felt like flying!
They swam until the stars came out, creating ripples that turned into silver light.
"Tomorrow," Lila said, drying off, "we can go running AND swimming!"
"And the day after," her shadow friend added, "who knows what other adventures we'll find?"
That night, Lila fell asleep with a smile. She had discovered something wonderful: sometimes the best friend has been beside you all along, just waiting for you to say hello.
