The Severed Connection

Marcus stood in the empty living room, holding the coaxial cable like a dead snake. The cable guy had left twenty minutes ago, taking with it the last tether to the life Marcus had built with Elena. No more HBO, no more shared laughter over terrible reality shows, no more background noise to fill the silences that had grown between them like kudzu.

He dropped the cable onto the cardboard box marked MEDIA - alone, because Elena had taken the streaming stick and the smart TV had been her mother's gift to her, not to them. Not to us. There is no us anymore.

On the kitchen counter, the evidence of Elena's departure was more intimate. A bottle of prenatal vitamins stood sentinel by the sink, half-full. Marcus had bought them six months ago, when they were still trying, when the future had felt like a promise rather than a threat. He picked up the bottle, the pills rattling like dried bones. Useless now. She'd left them behind - a small cruelty, or perhaps she'd simply forgotten in her rush to escape the disappointment that lived in his eyes whenever he looked at her.

He started to throw them in the trash, then stopped. His fingers found something else on the counter - a single long hair, dark and glossy with that particular sheen that came from the expensive conditioner she refused to give up even when money was tight. Elena's hair. He wrapped it around his finger, watching it coil, remembering how it had felt across his chest on Sunday mornings, tangled in his hands during arguments, plastered to her face when she cried.

The hair snapped. Just like that.

Marcus stared at the broken strand on his fingertip. So fragile, really. Everything was. He swept the hair into the trash with the vitamins - one memory discarded, another that should have been.

His phone buzzed. A text from his brother: "She's gone, man. Time to get back out there. Drinks tonight?"

Marcus typed: "Can't. Cable's out." It wasn't a lie. The cable was out. So was everything else.
