The Seventh Inning Stretch

The rain had turned the outfield into a mud slick, but the baseball game continued. Ethan sat in section 214, plastic poncho dripping, the bill of his baseball cap pulled low to hide eyes that had been crying since the seventh inning stretch.

The water staining his brim wasn't just rain.

Three weeks ago, Sarah had left him in this exact stadium, after their third anniversary dinner. "I need space," she'd said, while the crowd roared around them, oblivious to his world collapsing. She'd forgotten her hat—that navy-blue cap with the embroidered anchor she'd worn to every game since they'd started dating. He'd been wearing it ever since, as if keeping it close might somehow keep her close too.

Now the game was tied in the bottom of the ninth, and Ethan's phone buzzed. Sarah's name lit up the screen.

"Can we talk?"

He watched the batter swing and miss. Two strikes.

"About what?" he typed back, thumbs slippery with rain.

"About everything. About us. About the hat you're still wearing."

Ethan froze. How did she know? Unless she was here.

He scanned the crowd through the blur of rain. There she was, three sections over, holding a sign he recognized immediately: the one he'd made for her birthday last year, WATER YOU DOING WITHOUT ME? in sloppy blue letters.

The public address announcer's voice boomed: "Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the Kiss Cam."

Ethan's face appeared on the Jumbotron beside Sarah's. The rain had plastered his hair to his forehead, his hat soaked through. She looked beautiful, miserable, and furious all at once.

The crowd cheered. Chants of "KISS! KISS!" echoed through the stadium.

Ethan stood up. He held up the navy-blue hat. Then he placed it gently on the empty seat beside him.

"I'm not wearing it anymore," he shouted across the sections, voice cracking. "I'm done waiting."

The Kiss Cam cut away to a young couple who actually kissed. The crowd booed, then moved on.

His phone buzzed again. "Game over. I'm coming over."

Ethan sat back down. The final pitch flew toward home plate, and somewhere beneath the stadium, somewhere beyond the diamond, somewhere in the space between them, something new was beginning to grow.
