The Setup at Sarah's Pool

The setup was supposed to be foolproof. Tyler promised me that distracting Ryan's baseball team during their championship pool party would be legendary — exactly the kind of chaos that could finally make me interesting to Jessica, who'd been ghosting me since seventh grade.

Here's the thing about ideas born in the middle of the night: they always seem way better before you're actually executing them.

The plan involved my pet goldfish, Bubbles (I know, original name). The concept was simple: release Bubbles into the pool during the team's celebratory cannonball contest. Picture it — grown sixteen-year-old boys screaming about a fish invasion while I looked cool and mysterious. Tyler swore Jessica would think it was hilarious.

Instead, I stood there in my swim trunks, clutching Bubbles' bowl like it was a bomb, while Ryan's baseball team did their weird pre-championship chant in the shallow end. The pool was already gross enough without adding whatever bacteria lived in Bubbles' water.

"Yo, you gonna swim or just stand there holding that bowl?" someone yelled. Probably Matt, the pitcher who still thought fanny packs were high fashion.

This was it. My moment.

I dumped Bubbles in.

Except here's what nobody tells you about goldfish: they don't immediately swim around all cute and stuff. Bubbles did this weird floaty thing, basically suspended in awkward stillness while everyone went dead silent. Then someone screamed, "THAT'S A FISH!" and suddenly the entire baseball team was scrambling toward the deep end like the goldfish was some kind of predator.

Ryan, the team captain and currently the most popular guy at school, dove in. He emerged with Bubbles cupped in his hands, staring at it like it was an alien artifact.

"Bro," he said, looking directly at me, "why is there a goldfish in my pool?"

The party got awkward after that.

But here's the plot twist: Jessica thought it was hilarious. She came over while I was explaining to Ryan's mom that yes, that was my fish, and yes, I understood this was not normal behavior.

"That was literally the most unhinged thing I've ever seen," she said, grinning. "What's his name?"

"Bubbles," I said, wanting to die.

"Perfect," she said. "Hey, want to get food? I think we need to discuss your goldfish strategies."

So I didn't become a legend, but Jessica finally talked to me. And Bubbles lived to float another day. Win? Win.
