The Secrets We Bear
Maya pressed herself against the lockers, heart doing that weird flutter thing it always did when HE walked past. Jason. The sphinx of sophomore year—mysterious, unreadable, impossibly gorgeous. He moved through the halls like he knew something nobody else did, his expression carved from stone.
"You're totally dogging him again," Kayla whispered, appearing beside her like she'd apparated from thin air. "It's giving stalker vibes. Not cute."
Maya's face burned. "I am NOT dogging him. I'm... observing. From a tactical distance."
"You mean spying?" Kayla raised an eyebrow. "Because that's literally what spies do, Maya. They watch people without consent. It's creepy."
But it wasn't like that. Maya just carried this heavy, bear-sized crush that weighed down her every thought. Each glance in Jason's direction felt like carrying the world on her shoulders—exhausting, impossible, yet somehow worth it.
Then IT happened. Jason looked at her. Actually looked at her, right in the eyes, and cracked the tiniest smile. Not a smirk. A smile. Like maybe she wasn't invisible after all.
The sphinx had spoken.
Maya's dog, Barnaby, chose that exact moment to sprint around the corner, dragging his leash behind him like a runaway party streamer. He barrelled into Jason's legs with delighted enthusiasm, and suddenly Maya wasn't a spy anymore. She was just a girl whose chaotic golden retriever had just taken down the cutest boy in school.
Jason laughed. Not a fake laugh. A real one.
"Is he yours?"
Maya wanted to disappear. "Unfortunately."
"He's awesome," Jason said, scratching behind Barnaby's ears. "I'm Jason, by the way."
"Maya."
"Cool." He stood up, still smiling. "See you around, Maya."
She stood there frozen, Barnaby wagging his tail like he'd just accomplished something miraculous, while Kayla mouthed YOU'RE WELCOME from behind Jason's retreating back.
The sphinx's riddle had been simple all along: sometimes you don't need to spy from the shadows. Sometimes you just need a chaotic dog to crash into your life and break everything open.
Maya smiled. Sometimes secrets weren't meant to be kept. Sometimes they were meant to be shared.
