The Secret Water Garden

Lily loved to play spy. She would sneak through her backyard with her toy binoculars, searching for magical creatures. Her mom said she had the biggest imagination in the world.

One day, Lily followed a glittering path behind the old oak tree. She gasped! Before her stretched a secret garden she had never seen before. Crystal blue water sparkled in a pond so bright it looked like liquid sunshine.

'Hello there!' said a deep, friendly voice.

Lily peeked around a giant sunflower. A gentle brown bull with kind eyes was munching on flowers.

'I'm Barnaby,' the bull said. 'Would you like to meet my friend?'

He nodded toward a lily pad in the water. On it sat a green creature with floppy arms and a sleepy smile. It looked a little like a zombie from storybooks, but instead of being scary, it was painting beautiful pictures on its pad with a water lily.

'This is Zed,' Barnaby said softly. 'Everyone thinks zombies are scary, but Zed just loves to paint. He's a water zombie.'

Zed waved and held up his painting – it showed three friends playing together.

'This water is magical,' Zed spoke in a whispery voice. 'One splash makes you see what's really inside people's hearts.'

Lily dipped her fingers in the water. Suddenly, she saw glowing hearts around Barnaby and Zed – hearts full of kindness and friendship. She looked at her own heart and saw it glowing with curiosity and love.

'Never judge someone by how they look,' Zed painted. 'True friends see with their hearts.'

Lily visited her secret friends every day after that. She learned that magical worlds exist everywhere, especially when you look with your heart.

Sometimes the best discoveries aren't what we spy with our eyes – they're what we feel with our hearts.
