The Secret Water Dog
Lily had always been afraid of water. Every summer, while other kids splashed and played at Crystal Lake, she sat on the dry sand watching.
One hot afternoon, a scruffy golden dog appeared beside her. He had the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen, and he nudged her hand with his wet nose.
"Are you afraid too?" Lily whispered, petting his soft fur.
The dog barked happily and trotted toward the water's edge. He looked back at Lily, as if inviting her to follow.
"I can't," she called. "Water is scary."
But the dog wouldn't give up. He waded in until the blue water reached his chest, then swam in playful circles, sending sparkling droplets flying like diamonds in the sunlight.
Lily inched closer. The dog wasn't scared at all. He was having fun!
"You're my friend, aren't you?" she said. "Friends help each other."
The golden dog swam to shore and shook himself off, spraying Lily with tiny rainbow droplets. She laughed. It wasn't scary at all.
Lily dipped her toes in the cool lake. The dog swam beside her, staying close as if promising to keep her safe. Something magical happened then—the water around them began to glow softly, and Lily could feel the dog's courage flowing into her.
"I'm swimming!" she shouted, kicking her legs and paddling her arms. The water held her up, gentle and supporting, while her faithful friend circled nearby.
That summer, Lily and her magical water dog discovered secrets of the lake together. They found hidden coves, sang with the frogs, and even made friends with other children who weren't afraid.
The best secret? The lake wasn't scary at all when you had a friend by your side.
Even now, when Lily visits the lake, sometimes she sees a golden shape darting through the shimmering water, reminding her that true friendship can help you conquer any fear—even one as deep as the ocean itself.
