The Secret Spy Club
Lily pressed her eye to the spy hole she'd made from an empty paper towel roll. The secret cable she'd strung between her bedroom window and her best friend Sam's house next door wiggled—that was their signal!
Sam's message came through loud and clear: "Meet at the park. Something magical is happening!"
Lily grabbed her spy backpack and tiptoed past her dad, who was making dinner. The house smelled funny—like cooked spinach. "Yuck," she whispered to herself.
At the park, Sam was waiting by the old padel court. But instead of playing, he was staring at someone strange.
A small green creature shambled near the bench. He looked a bit like a zombie from the movies, but he was wearing a bright yellow party hat and holding a bouquet of dandelions.
"Is that..." Lily whispered.
"A zombie?" Sam nodded. "But watch this."
The zombie shuffled toward them and held out the flowers. His voice sounded like crunching autumn leaves: "Friend? You play padel with Zombo?"
Lily and Sam looked at each other. This wasn't a scary zombie at all!
"Sure!" said Sam, grabbing a padel racket.
They played for an hour. Zombo wasn't very good—he kept tripping over his own feet—but he laughed a wheezy, happy laugh.
"Zombo lonely," he said sadly when they sat on the bench to rest. "Everyone runs away because Zombo looks scary."
Lily's heart squeezed. "That's not fair. Just because someone looks different doesn't mean they're not kind inside."
"Exactly," Sam agreed. "Hey, want to come to my house? My mom is making pizza!"
Zombo's eyes widened. "Pizza? Zombo never had pizza!"
At Sam's house, his mom welcomed Zombo warmly. She even put extra spinach on the pizza—because even zombies need their vitamins!
That night, Lily tugged gently on the secret cable between the windows. Sam's voice floated through: "Best spy mission ever?"
"The best," Lily whispered back. "We made a new friend. And that's the best adventure of all."
From then on, the secret spy club had three members. And sometimes, if you looked closely at the park, you'd see them all playing padel together—a girl, a boy, and a zombie in a yellow party hat, learning that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes.
