The Secret Spinach Spy

Leo hated spinach. Every night, his mom said, "Eat your greens, Leo!" But Leo always pushed the green leaves to the side of his plate.

One afternoon, Leo was playing baseball in the park with his best friend, Maya. Leo was up to bat. The pitcher threw the ball, and—CRACK! Leo hit it deep into center field. He ran around the bases, his heart pounding with joy.

"You're getting faster!" Maya called out.

That evening, Leo's mom served spinach again. Leo sighed and stared at the green pile. Then something strange happened. A tiny sparkle of light floated up from his spinach—like miniature lightning flashing on his plate.

Curious, Leo picked up a leaf of spinach. In the palm of his hand, the tiny light grew brighter. Suddenly, a small voice squeaked, "Psst! Hey, kid!"

Leo looked around. No one was there. "Who said that?"

"Me! The spinach!" The leaf hopped in his hand. "I'm Sam the Spinach Spy. I've been sent by the Vegetable Kingdom on a top-secret mission!"

Leo's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"Only to kids who never eat us," Sam whispered. "I'm supposed to find out why you don't like spinach. We're worried!"

Leo giggled. "It's just... green and mushy."

Sam shook his little green leaf. "But spinach gives you superhero strength! How do you think you hit that baseball so far today?"

Leo gasped. "That was you?"

"Well, the spinach you ate yesterday," Sam admitted. "Imagine how fast you'd run if you ate MORE of us!"

Leo looked at his plate with new eyes. "Really?"

"Pinky promise!" Sam said, offering his tiny green stem. "And we make you smarter too. Maya told me you want to be a scientist."

Leo smiled. He ate every bite of spinach that night—and Sam disappeared in a little flash of green light.

The next baseball game, Leo hit the ball farther than ever before. Maya cheered. "What's your secret?"

Leo winked and tapped his nose. "A spy told me. But it's a secret."
