The Secret Sky Padel
Lily and Max loved to play padel in the park. Every Saturday, they'd grab their racquets and hit the bouncy ball back and forth. But today, something magical happened.
CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the clear blue sky — but it wasn't scary. It sparkled with colors: pink, purple, and golden yellow. The lightning bolt didn't hit the ground. Instead, it wrapped around an old television cable that hung between two telephone poles, like it was giving it a hug.
"I'm going to spy on that," whispered Lily, her eyes wide with wonder.
The children crept closer, hiding behind trees. Through the bushes, they saw something impossible. The old cable was glowing, humming with a soft, happy tune. And at the end of the cable stood... a zombie!
But this wasn't a scary zombie. He wore a bright yellow bow tie and held a bouquet of flowers. He looked like someone who had woken up from a very long nap and was now trying to remember what joy felt like.
"Hello," the zombie said shyly. "I'm Zed. I've been asleep for a hundred years. This magic lightning cable woke me up."
Lily and Max stepped out from behind the tree. "I'm Lily!"
"I'm Max! Want to play padel with us?"
Zed's gray face lit up. "Oh, I've never played!"
They spent the afternoon teaching Zed to hit the padel ball. He was slow and clumsy at first, but he laughed more than any child the park had ever heard. The magic cable sparkled overhead, keeping the storm away, making the perfect sunny day.
"Being asleep was lonely," Zed said as the sun began to set. "But friendship is the best lightning bolt of all. It wakes up your heart."
Lily and Max promised to visit Zed every weekend. And they did, because some friends are worth waking up for — no matter how long you've been asleep.
