The Secret Sea Cable
Lily loved to sit at the end of the old wooden dock, her bare feet dangling in the cool lake water. She was the kind of kid who noticed everything—the way dragonflies hovered like tiny helicopters, how the ripples made patterns that looked like lace, and the strange thick black cable that disappeared into the water's depths.
One Tuesday, while pretending to read but really watching the water, she saw it: a flash of iridescent blue, like a living sapphire. Something tugged gently at that mysterious cable. Lily held her breath. Was she seeing things?
Then a face emerged—not scary, but wonderful. A girl with long flowing hair that shimmered like seaweed in a current, only it glowed softly, like moonlight made into silk. The mermaid girl waved, then pointed to the cable and made gestures that looked like she was trying to say something important.
"Are you... a friend?" Lily whispered, leaning closer.
The mermaid nodded enthusiastically! She pulled something from the cable—a small waterproof pouch—and inside was a note written in sparkly blue letters: HELLO FROM DOWN BELOW. THIS CABLE LETS US SEND MESSAGES TO LAND FRIENDS. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PEN PALS?
Lily's heart jumped. She wrote back immediately: YES! My name is Lily. What's yours?
They met every afternoon after that. The mermaid, whose name was Coral, told Lily about an underwater castle made of pearl and coral, where sea creatures had parties and sang songs that made bubbles dance. Coral had the most beautiful hair in all the ocean—each strand could change color to match her mood!
"I used to spy on you from below," Coral admitted one day. "I watched how you were kind to the ducks and careful not to litter. That's how I knew you'd be a good friend."
Lily learned that day that sometimes the best discoveries come from being curious and kind. The cable she'd wondered about for years wasn't just wires and rubber—it was a friendship bridge between two worlds.
Every summer, Lily and Coral exchange messages through their magical cable, and sometimes, if you look closely at just the right moment, you might see a girl on a dock and a mermaid below, both giggling about some secret joke that only true friends can share.
