The Secret Pyramid Spy
Lily pressed her cardboard spy badge against her chest and peeked through her secret spy telescope—a paper towel roll. Today was the most important spying day ever. Someone had built a mysterious pyramid in her backyard!
It wasn't a big pyramid like in Egypt. This one was made of sparkling golden blocks that hummed with magic. Lily's best friend Maya appeared beside her, wearing her own spy badge made of aluminum foil.
"What do you spy?" Maya whispered.
"A pyramid," Lily whispered back. "And something's moving inside!"
The friends crept closer, tiptoeing like ninjas. Through the crystal window of the pyramid, they saw a green creature shuffling around. He had messy hair, mismatched shoes, and moved very, very slowly.
"Is that a zombie?" Lily gasped. "Mom says zombies are scary!"
But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He was swimming—gliding through the air as if it were water—doing lazy backstrokes and front strokes. He wore tiny floaties on his arms and had sparkles in his green hair instead of being scary and rotten.
"Hello?" Maya called out.
The zombie stopped swimming and floated gently to the crystal door. He opened it and smiled, showing square white teeth. "Welcome! I'm Zed, and I'm the Sleepy Pyramid Guardian!"
"Guardian of what?" Lily asked.
"The Dream Pool!" Zed pointed inside the pyramid. There it was—a beautiful pool filled with glowing water that made you float when you stood near it. "This pool gives children wonderful dreams. I swim in magic to keep the water sparkling."
"We thought you were a scary zombie," Maya admitted.
Zed laughed. "Zombie just means someone who moves slowly and loves sleeping! I'm not scary—I'm sleepy!"
The girls giggled. Zed invited them to try the Dream Pool. When they dipped their fingers in the water, they saw pictures of flying on rainbows, dancing with stars, and eating ice cream clouds.
"Spy lesson of the day," Lily whispered to Maya. "Never judge someone by how slowly they move. Sometimes the best friends are the ones who take their time."
Every night now, Lily and Maya have wonderful dreams. And sometimes, when they look through their spy telescopes, they see Zed swimming in his magical pyramid, making sure children everywhere sleep sweetly.
Being a spy isn't just about discovering secrets. It's about discovering that things aren't always what they seem—and that sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures make the gentlest friends.
