The Secret Pool Spy
Lily loved playing spy. She wore her dad's old sunglasses and carried a notebook everywhere she went. "I'm on a secret mission," she'd whisper to her cat, Whiskers.
One summer evening, while spying from her treehouse, Lily spotted something strange. A shimmering cable stretched from the old oak tree to her neighbor's backyard pool. It glowed softly, like captured moonlight.
"What are you up to, Mr. Henderson?" she wondered. The grumpy old man never used his pool. But tonight, he was attaching something magical to the cable.
Lily crept closer, her spy notebook ready. She watched as Mr. Henderson lowered a tiny lantern onto the cable. It slid down like a zip line, right into the water.
SPLASH!
The pool lit up with golden light. Lily gasped. Fish made of pure starlight swam beneath the surface. They were the most beautiful things she'd ever seen.
"I see you there, little spy," Mr. Henderson called gently. Lily froze, but he just smiled. "Come closer. These starfish only visit during the summer full moon. They bring wishes from children all over the world."
Lily approached the pool, her eyes wide. The starfish nudged the surface, their scales chiming like tiny bells.
"They swim up through the earth all the way from the center of the galaxy," Mr. Henderson explained. "This cable helps them find their way."
Lily made a wish silently. A starfish splashed water at her, and she laughed.
"Your wish will come true," Mr. Henderson promised. "But remember — the best secrets are meant to be shared with friends."
Lily smiled. Being a spy was fun, but discovering magic with a friend was even better. She couldn't wait to return next full moon, this time with her little brother in tow.
Some mysteries, she learned, are better than secrets — especially the ones that sparkle.
