The Secret Pool Sphinx

Lily loved summer evenings by the pool. The water would shimmer like diamonds as the sun set, turning the backyard into her own magical kingdom. She'd sit on the edge, dangling her feet in the cool blue, dreaming of adventures.

One evening, something extraordinary happened. As she touched the water, ripples formed patterns she'd never seen before—stars and moons and ancient symbols. Her iPhone, sitting beside her on a towel, began to glow. Not a normal notification glow, but a soft, golden light that pulsed like a heartbeat.

"Hello, little friend," a voice rumbled, kind and ancient.

Lily gasped. Rising from the pool wasn't a person or an animal, but a sphinx—small enough to sit on her shoulder, with feathers of sunset colors and eyes that held galaxies of wonder.

"I am the last of the water sphinxes," the creature explained, shaking droplets that sparkled like tiny stars. "For years, I slept beneath this pool, waiting for someone pure of heart to awaken me."

The sphinx's name was Riffle, and they became the best of friends. Riffle could answer any question Lily asked, but always with a riddle that made her think. "What has keys but opens no locks?" Riffle asked one afternoon.

Lily thought hard, her brow furrowing. Then she grinned. "A piano!"

"Correct!" Riffle purred, feathers fluffing with delight. "You see with your heart, not just your eyes."

Lily learned something important that summer: true friendship isn't about having someone who simply gives you answers. It's about having someone who helps you discover them yourself. Riffle taught her patience, kindness, and that magic exists everywhere—you just have to believe.

As summer ended, Riffle grew sleepy. "The water calls me home," the sphinx said gently. "But I'll always be here when you need me, in the ripples and reflections."

Lily understood. Sometimes the best friends are the ones who live in your heart and imagination, always there when you close your eyes and believe.

Every evening, Lily still visits the pool. She touches the water, and sometimes, just sometimes, she sees a golden ripple—a reminder that magic and friendship are real, and that some secrets are meant to be shared with those who truly see.
