The Secret Pool's Riddle

Lily loved exploring her backyard, especially on hot summer days. Behind the old oak tree, hidden by tall grass, she discovered something magical—a glowing blue pool she had never seen before.

Her golden retriever, Max, barked happily and wagged his tail as if he knew a secret. The water sparkled like diamonds under the sunlight.

Suddenly, the water rippled. From the center of the pool rose a magnificent sphinx, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. Her eyes shone like stars.

"Welcome, young adventurer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle bells. "I am Cleopatra, guardian of the Wishing Pool. For one hundred years, I have waited for someone pure of heart."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "A... a real sphinx? And a wishing pool?"

Cleopatra nodded. "But first, you must answer my riddle: What has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

Lily thought hard. Max nudged her hand with his wet nose, as if encouraging her. She smiled—she knew this riddle! Her grandmother had told it to her.

"A person!" Lily exclaimed. "A baby crawls on four legs, a grown-up walks on two, and an elderly person uses a cane, making three."

Cleopatra's face lit up with joy. "Correct! You have shown wisdom and kindness. Now, make your wish—but remember, the best wishes are those that help others."

Lily looked at Max, who was panting from the heat. She thought of her friend Emma, whose puppy had been lost for three days. Emma was so sad.

"I wish Emma's puppy comes home safely," Lily said without hesitation.

The pool glowed even brighter. Max barked with excitement. When the light faded, Cleopatra smiled warmly.

"Your wish is granted. And because you wished for another, you have also earned my friendship. Whenever you visit, I will be here."

That evening, Emma called Lily, crying happy tears. Her puppy had miraculously appeared in their backyard, safe and sound.

As Lily fell asleep that night, Max curled up beside her. She knew that magic was real, and the best magic of all was kindness.
