The Secret Pool Party

Lily loved the old swimming pool in her backyard. Even though the paint was peeling and the water was a bit green, it was magical. Every summer evening, she'd swim while fireflies danced around her.

One hot July night, something strange happened. As Lily dipped her toes in the cool water, she saw a hand reach up from the bottom of the pool! She gasped and jumped back.

But then—SPLASH! A boy popped up, dripping wet. He looked pale and his eyes were half-closed. Lily trembled. Was this a zombie?

"Hello," said the boy, smiling kindly. "I'm Zed."

"Are you... a zombie?" Lily asked, clutching her towel.

Zed laughed. "No! My name is Zed, short for Zedekiah. I live in the magical world beneath your pool. I come up every summer to make new friends."

Lily relaxed. Zed explained that his people were called the Water Sleepers because they spent half the year sleeping in beautiful underwater caves. That's why he looked so sleepy!

"Want to see my world?" Zed asked. He handed her a special pearl. "Hold this, and you can breathe underwater."

Lily held her breath and ducked under. What she saw amazed her! An entire kingdom of crystal caves and glowing flowers stretched below. Children were playing tag, and fish carried messages in bubbles.

She spent the evening playing games with Zed and his friends. They had a pool party with underwater dancing and magical treats that tasted like sunshine.

When it was time for Lily to go home, Zed gave her a shell. "If you ever want to visit, just hold this and whisper my name."

From then on, Lily learned never to judge someone by how they looked. What seemed scary at first became the most wonderful friendship of her summer.

Every night, she waves at the pool before bed, knowing her sleepy friend sleeps in the magical water below, waiting for their next adventure together.
